Defining Expectations

Students select classes based on many factors: interest, necessity (a requirement), time of the class, a friend’s advice and reputation of the instructor. This class may be a first or last choice but each class has the potential of being an important adventure in learning. We often hear from a student that a class they used to “fill up” their schedule turns out to be an interesting and even sometimes a life changing experience.

As the instructor, you set the stage for providing a positive engagement with students. Through your syllabus you establish the goals of the course and the processes through which you and they will achieve these goals. Explain how you will conduct the class and how you will handle grading through quizzes, tests, class participation, group projects, outside events, presentations, etc.

Invite students to visit your open hours and make sure that your hours are available to all students.
