Engaging Students
- Introduce yourself to students and explain your interest in the curriculum.
- Invite students for a private meeting to discuss their learning needs.
- Include a disabilities statement on your syllabus.
- Learn about your students’ backgrounds and previous experiences with course content through discussion or survey.
- Make expectations clear and define how you will handle exceptions to these.
- Start by telling students what you will cover and offer a visual outline.
- Assess students’ prior knowledge about session topic.
- Pre-teach critical vocabulary and concepts.
- Seek out students who are not participating or producing quality work and invite them to discuss their issues privately. Determine if a referral is needed.
- Appoint notetakers who will upload their notes to a class site for everyone’s benefit.
